This month in G14...

English Language Arts
We are reading the novel, Wonder. Ask your child about the main character, Auggie, as well as supporting characters: Via, Summer, Jack Will and Julian. Additionally, we have spent a significant amount of time analyzing various perspectives, understanding how an author develops characters, identifying and interpreting figurative language.
In Writing, we are finishing up our unit on informative/expository writing. Your student has already completed a writing prompt on animal migration and hibernation and is now focusing on animal defense tactics. This writing prompt covers the full scope and sequence of the writing strategy; including researching, planning, drafting, revising, and publishing.

Math

Students have just completed Unit 2 - Volume and Measurement  surrounding the volume of 3-dimensional figures. Students completed the Unit 2 Assessment on Friday, November 18. Once students return from Thanksgiving Break, G14 will begin the next Math unit on Fractions and Decimals. We will focus on decimal equivalents of fractions as well as comparing, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions.

Social Studies

Students have just completed the Unit 1 Assessment for Social Studies surrounding Historical Perspective and the Civil War. In our next unit, we will begin learning about the Industrial Revolution and Economic concepts.

Science

Students have finished their unit on Ecosystems and are now transitioning into the next Unit, Slick Solutions. Slick Solutions is a natural progression from Ecosystems, as it builds on the students' understanding of organisms and the environment, but particularly how our ecosystems can be impacted by pollution. In the Slick Solutions unit, students will experience hands-on learning as they recreate oil spills and collaborate with peers to develop their own oil-cleaning devices.
